We are a managing general agency and wholesale brokerage placing commercial property and casualty business across the country. We are building a new distribution unit, and we are hiring underwriters who can hold the pen and grow a book at the same time.
Roles we are hiring for
Every application is read by the head of underwriting, not by a screening tool. If your background fits, you will hear from us directly.
Senior Underwriter, Commercial P&C
A true underwriting seat with a production mandate. You will evaluate, price and bind commercial P&C risks under delegated and binding authority, place what falls outside those programs through our brokerage facilities, and build the producer distribution that feeds a brand-new business unit.
About the job
Greenwood General is a managing general agency and wholesale brokerage operating contract-bind and brokerage facilities across 47 states with 25+ carrier relationships. We’re standing up a new business unit to expand our distribution footprint, and we’re looking for experienced underwriters who can both own risk decisions and grow the book of producers they work with.
The role
This is a true underwriting seat with a production mandate. You will evaluate, price, and bind commercial P&C risks under both delegated and binding authority, and place risks through our brokerage facilities when they fall outside those programs. As part of a new business unit, you’ll also be responsible for building the distribution that feeds it: connecting with existing brokers and local agents, appointing them, and developing ongoing relationships that drive submissions. You’ll apply real judgment within carrier guidelines, not refer everything upstream.
What you’ll do
- Review, analyze, and underwrite new and renewal commercial P&C submissions
- Exercise both delegated and binding authority within limits across multiple carrier programs
- Price risk and structure terms, conditions, and coverage
- Place and manage risks through brokerage facilities where they fall outside delegated or binding authority
- Build and grow distribution: identify, connect with, and appoint brokers and local agents, and develop lasting relationships that generate business
- Serve as the underwriting point of contact for your producers
- Maintain underwriting discipline, file documentation, and compliance with carrier guidelines
What we require (non-negotiable)
- Minimum 4 years of hands-on commercial P&C underwriting experience
- Demonstrated experience underwriting under delegated authority, binding authority, and through brokerage facilities. All three.
- You must have actually held the pen: made risk decisions, priced accounts, and bound business. This is not a role for producers, account managers, or agents whose experience is sales rather than risk selection.
- Comfort building producer relationships and growing a book. This unit’s success depends on developing distribution, not just processing submissions
- Solid grasp of ACORD applications, loss runs, exposure analysis, and carrier guideline interpretation
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
Preferred
- Surplus lines / E&S experience
- Multi-state and multi-line exposure
- Experience in an MGA, wholesale, or program environment
- Existing broker/agent relationships you can bring to the table
- Relevant designations (CPCU, AU, etc.)
